「硫黄島からの手紙」のどこに感動できるのか？
「硫黄島からの手紙」を観に行った。
非常に前評判が高い映画だったのだが、正直な感想としては...。
一体この映画は、何のために製作された映画なのだろう。どこに感動するのだろう。
戦争が悲惨なことはいうまでもない。特に、この硫黄島の戦いは、第二次大戦の中でも激戦で知られていて、実際生き地獄のような状況だったのだろう。
しかし、この悲惨さを、火炎放射器で黒焦げになる死体の山や、爆弾で飛散する肉体などをこれでもかこれでもかと、リアルに表現することに、何の意味があるというのだろうか？
この作品の、重要な切り口は、手紙だったのではないか。手紙を書く人、読む人、色々なドラマがそこにあるはずだが、この映画の中で、そこにフォーカスされたシーンは、極めて少ない。殆どのシーンは、戦うか死ぬか。
また、栗林中将は、職業軍人としては、5日で全滅するところを、洞窟を要塞化することにより、36日も持ちこたえたという点で、優れているのかもしれない。しかし、最初から部下は全員死ぬことを前提としており、そのことに対する躊躇や恐れのようなものは、全く感じられない。
栗林中将のいう、命を大切にするというのは、単に苦しい生の期間を長引かせ、一人でも多くのアメリカ兵を道連れにしろ、ということであり、これもまた戦争という異常事態においてのみ、正当化できる類の思考であり、一方的に賛美できるものでもないだろう。
この作品のどこが、素晴らしいのだろう？俺には、さっぱりわからないのであった。
