今晩、TVを何の気なしにみていたら、スガシカオがインタビューに応えていた。

30歳からプロに転向したので、中々レコード会社に契約してもらえなかったこと。父親や友人の死に遭遇し、2年間全く曲がかけなかったこと。そんな中でも、音楽はいつも彼を助け、欠落したものをうずめる存在だったこと。誠実に答える姿を見て、如何に音楽が、彼にとって大きい存在であったかを感じた。また、その真摯な姿勢に、引き込まれるように見入ってしまった。

インタビュー後、そんな挫折や逆境を乗り越えようというメッセージを込めて創られた「PROGRESS」という歌を演奏することになった。

良い曲なのだが、どこかで聴いたメロディー、どこかで聴いた歌詞。マーメイドと、「これってミスチルみたいだよね」ということで、久々に意見が一致。

良い歌なのに、ユニークと思えない。繊細で肌理の細かいボーカルだが、言葉を伝えられない。色々な苦労や逆境を乗り越え、その重い経験を唄ったのに、何も胸に響かない。

才能のあるなしは、努力とか苦労とか、全く関係なく、残酷なまでに明白だ。

別段美声でもない、ミスチルの桜井和寿が唄うと、言葉とメロディーに信じられないような力が加わり、思わず聴き入ってしまう。CMでかかった、小田和正の「たしかなこと」を聴いて、泣けてしまう。先日買った、キャノンボール・アダレイの「STICKS」が流れると、我知らず体がスイングしている。

名曲「夜空ノムコウ」も、歌の上手下手関係なく、SMAPでなければ、スタンダードにはなりえていないだろう。スガシカオのほうが、当然歌は上手いのだが、SMAPの5人が歌うことにより、歌詞に深さ、広がり、リアリティが生まれる。

タレントと言ってしまえば、それまでなのかもしれないが、テクニックを越えて、魂を揺さぶるものがある。

スガシカオは、インタビューの中で、「自分くらいの才能の人は沢山いる。でも一歩づつ前に進むことが重要だと思っている」と語っていたが、煌くような才能とは無縁の俺は、とってもとっても共感した。

凡人が天才に追いつくことは、悲しいけれど、ないのかもしれない。ただ、努力し続けることは、それだけで価値のあるものと思う。「ビジネスは結果が全てだろ」とか、格好をつけて日頃言っているが、それだけではないと心底思っている。

ところで、俺の本質は芸術的才能にあり、美しいメロディーとポエムが、頭の中では常に流れているが、楽譜が書けないので、表現できない辛さを、マーメイドにかなり熱っぽく語ったのだが、説明の途中で「ほな、さいなら」と寝てしまった。ひねくれて、不良になりそうな気がする。
