広島の夏は、本当に暑い。

僕が、広島にいた頃は、まだキャンパスは、市内にあり、校門前には路面電車の停留所があった。多くの都市で、路面電車が姿を消す中、広島では今も不可欠な交通手段としての地位を確保している。のんびり、ゆっくり、街の真ん中を走る。

今日、61年前に被爆した路面電車が引退するという記事をみて、色々な映像がフラッシュバックした。何故か、思い出すのは、真夏のキャンパスのイメージ。

広島市内には、太田川の支流が幾つも流れている。その上にかかる橋の一つに、御幸橋がある。下宿と大学間にこの橋が架かっており、何度自転車で往復したか数え切れないくらい。この橋も、被爆していて、当時でも、放射能センサーの針が振り切れるほど。
夏の広島は、鬼のように暑い。湿度も高く、蒸し暑い。しかし、橋の上を自転車で渡るとき、ふっと涼しい風が吹いたりする。

卒業後、4～5年でキャンパスは、田舎に引っ越してしまい、今では、赤レンガでできた理学部の建物しか残っていない。校門をぬけると、右手に大きなポプラの木があり、真正面には、この赤レンガの古びた建物がそびえている。この建物も被爆をしていて、理学部内部では、やはりセンサーの針が大きくふれる。最上階には大きな時計がはめ込まれており、立ち姿がとても美しい。夕陽を浴びた理学部は、僕のお気に入りの風景である。

広島の夏は、本当に暑い。

図書館の裏で、青空をみながら、この季節に多くの人が一瞬でこの世から消えてしまったんだなあ…とビビッドに感じたりした。

電車からでも、橋からでも、建物からでも、青空からでも、多くの事を感じ取れる頃に、広島にいたことは、とても意義深いことだったのかもしれない。
